Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

Meeting Date:  May 3, 2006

President Pat Baba called the meeting to order at 7:34 PM.

Corrections/Additions to Minutes

There was no correction to the April minutes.

 

Treasurer’s Report:  David Ziesmer presented the treasurer’s report. 

 

Acknowledgements/Announcements

1.  The Athletic Club donated $2,000 to the Building Fund and $500 to the Scholarship Fund. 

2.  California Bank and Trust donated $1,500 for the printing of the raffle tickets, and $250 to the Scholarship Fund.

3.  Union Bank donated $500 to the Scholarship Fund.

 

Affiliated Clubs/Chairpersons Reports:

 

 

 

     JARCC - Sam Sunada

·         New floors are to be installed in the kitchen.  This project is planned to be completed before the summer festival.

   Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • Saturday May 6th is Saturday evening service at 5:30 p.m. and Rev. Matsumoto is presiding.
  • The last service before summer is June 3rd at 5:30 p.m. and Rev Kujo is presiding.
  • Obon service is on July 25th at 7:30 p.m.

   Jr. YBA – Sharon Akiyama

  • No report.

      Judo Club – Leslie Hisaka

  • Judo started practicing on Tuesday nights from 6-8 p.m.  We would like to thank the JARCC for allowing us to do this.
  • Many contestants traveled to the Okubo tournament in Sacramento on 4/9.  Congratulations to Brandon and Megan Ikeda and Ryan and Scott Hisaka who placed 2nd, and Derek Lin who placed 3rd.
  • We had a fabulous showing also in Watsonville on 4/30 where Brent and Ryan Hisaka and Derek Lin placed 1st, Brandon and Megan Ikeda took 2nd and Scott Hisaka took 3rd. Congrats to all!

   Nippongo Gakuen - Ron Onizuka

  • Gakugeikai is May 20th.
  • There are openings for next year.  If interested, please check the website at www.diablojaclub.org or call any school board member.

   Athletic Club – Sharon Akiyama

  • Basketball sign-ups for next year will take place on Friday June 2nd from 6-8:00 p.m.
  • The fall basketball clinic date TBA.
  • Graduation dinner is at 5:00 pm on June 4th.  If anyone knows of a graduating middle school, high school, or college student, please contact Sharon or Lisa Kinoshita.
  • Please the check the lost and found boxes in the front area of the gym.  Those items not claimed by the end of June will be donated.

 

        Building Superintendent – Ted Uemura

  • Several projects are planned for May/June:  New lights in the center section of the gym, and new basketball backboards have been purchased. 
  • Informational notice:  PGE will give a $35.00 rebate to anyone who donates a refrigerator that is in WORKING condition.  Limit is two per household.

    Diablo Kendo Club – Judith Aono for

·    The club practices on Sundays at 6 p.m.

 

   Shinwakai – Yukio Kitagawa

  • May 20th is Bingo at their regular meeting.
  • On June 24th is the 22nd annual Family Talent Night.  This evening honors seniors 80 yrs and older. Please look for the flier in the foyer.  It is a potluck dinner with lots of entertainment and fun for all!  In addition the “senior of the year” will be announced and recognized in a special way. Talent applications are due by June 14th.

    Gardeners’ Club – Akiyamasan

  • No report.

   Taiko Club – No Represntative

     Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

  • They continue to be in the planning stages for the 50th Anniversary Summer Festival.  They will meet with the tempura cooking committee this month. 

     Ikenobo Club - Pat Baba

  • No report.

 

     Membership Chairperson – Judith Aono for

  • No report.

         JASEB –Yukio Kitagawa

·         On July 31st, JASEB will have their annual golf tournament at Sequoia Country Club in Oakland.

·         On Friday May 12th, Macy's at Sun Valley Mall is hosting a "community shopping day."  Macy's sponsors Non-profit groups like JASEB, so that if you buy a $10.00 ticket this will not only entitle you to a 15-20% discount on most everything at Macy's, but the $10.00 ticket price will be donated to JASEB!  Let's all go shopping and support JASEB! 

Old Business - None

 

New Business

  • The Annual JA Club College Scholarship applications are available now.
  • Awards will be based on: grades, JA club activities, community activities.  The scholarship is in essay format. Letters of recommendation, including one from a JA member who can write about the applicant’s involvement in the JA club.  Applicants must have be an active member of the JA club for a minimum of the last 3 years.  Final Deadline is May 22nd. (no exceptions). Applications must be received by that date.

  • Applications are available by calling or emailing Karen Sakata at 925-837-9216 or sakatak@mdusd.k12.ca.us .
  • Please remember that the bulletin board that is outside the kitchen is not to be touched by anyone other than JA club board members.  No advertisements will be posted there.  Also, the monthly newsletter as well as various Club Results will be posted in the glass-enclosed bulletin board that is located in the front foyer area of the gym
