Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

President Sharon Akiyama called the meeting to order at 7:34 PM.

Treasurer’s ReportDavid Ziesmer presented the June treasurer’s report

 

 Acknowledgements/Announcements

1.      Thank you note received from Jeana Shindo in appreciation for the scholarship dinner and gifts.

2.      $500.00 donation to the Scholarship Fund from Dr. John M. Lee and Ms. Aiko Ota Lee.

3.      $450.00 donation to the Building Fund from EBYAL for the 2008-2009 basketball season.

4.      $100.00 donation to the Building Fund from the Matsutani family in memory of Isamu Matsutani.

5.      $250.00 donation to the Building Fund from Michael Baker in memory of Marian Annette Baker.

JARCC – Bob Okubo

·         All groups should submit gym schedules as soon as possible – no later than the end of the month.

·         Thanks to Ron Onizuka and the Festival Committee for a terrific summer festival.

Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • Services will begin Sunday, September 13th.  There will be a potluck brunch after service.
  • Our first visiting minister will be Rev. Taniguchi.  All are welcome to hear him speak on Saturday, October 3rd
  • The toban schedule and list of future speakers is posted on the bulletin board.

Jr. YBA – Sharon Akiyama

 

  • No report.

 

Nippongo GakuenSandi Svoboda

  • The first day of school will be Saturday, September 12th beginning at 8:45 A.M.  We will have just under 60 students and are hoping to have new students join.  New families are welcome to register their children on the first day.
  • The Gakuen is holding an E-waste Fundraiser on Saturday, October 3rd here in the JARCC parking lot.  Please begin to collect items to donate. We are particularly interested in collecting old TVs and computer monitors.  Please see flyer for other acceptable items.  (A copy of the flyer is posted on the J.A. bulletin board.)   Note that some items will require an extra fee.  This event is open to the public so please inform your friends, family, coworkers, etc.
  • Rodger Johnson has agreed to take on the position of President. The membership will officially vote him in at the first General Meeting of the school year.
  • The Gakuen is planning to host the Holiday Party again this year.  The event will be held on Sunday, December 6th.
  • Thanks to Wayne Akiyama for getting the raffle tickets to the Gakuen families early. We hope this increased the response rate from our membership.

Athletic Club – Dave Uemura

·         Teams will be set up on Friday, September 4th. Families will be notified of their child(ren)’s placement soon.

·         The Diablo Basketball Clinic will be held on Saturday, September 26th from 2:00 – 6:00 P.M. and on Sunday, September 27th from 10:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.  Please contact Matt Morizono for information.

Building Superintendent – Jon Yokoyama

Gardeners’ Club – Judith Aono

  • No report.

Ikenobo Club – Pat Baba

JASEB –

Judo Club - Conrad Hisaka

 

  • The USJF Junior National Tournament took place in July. Ryan Hisaka received the gold medal in the 48 kilo division. Derek Lin received the silver medal in the 53 kilo division. In addition, Ryan Hisaka was awarded Outstanding Male Competitor, a special award from the USJF. Congratulations Ryan and Derek.
  • Thursday classes will begin on September 3rd. Please arrive at 6:30 P.M. to set up the mats. September is a good time for beginner kids, teens, and adults to join. All are welcome.

 

Diablo Kendo Club – Mike Espinosa

 

  • Congratulations to Adrian Aono who took 1st place at the Northern California Kendo Championships.
  • As always, new students are welcome.

 

Shinwakai

 

·         Bingo will be held on Saturday, September 19th at 1:00 P.M. If anyone is interested in helping to coordinate this and other future Shinwakai events, please contact Sharon Akiyama.

 

   Diablo Taiko Club – Susan Nishizaka

 

  • No report.

 

   Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

 

  • Thanks to all who helped at the Summer Festival.
  • The Post-Festival meeting for all chairpersons will be held on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:30 P.M.
  • Although all of the numbers are not in yet, it appears that we are down between 3 to 4 percent from last year. It’s possible that the intense heat on Sunday was a factor.
  • All those who volunteered at the festival are invited to the Festival Appreciation Dinner on Saturday, October 10th at 5:00 P.M.
  • Save the date! Next year’s festival will be held on August 14th and 15th.

    

   Membership Chairperson – Laura Takeuchi

 

  • A few renewals have come in.
  • Group coordinators, please let Laura know if any families have quit so that the membership list can be updated.

·         None

     New Business

 

·        The City of Concord is holding their annual “Moment of Unity” at the Concord City Council Chamber on Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00 P.M.  This observance is intended to show the community’s commitment to tolerance and mutual respect.  The city is requesting a representative from our organization to attend.  If you are interested, please contact Sharon Akiyama.

·        All are welcome to the Eden Holiday Craft Show on Saturday, October 3rd from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the Marina Community Center in San Leandro.

·        Attention members who use our facilities at night – please be respectful of the noise level of your group.  We have had complaints from our neighbors
