Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

President Sharon Akiyama called the meeting to order at 7:39 PM.

 

Corrections/Additions to Previous Minutes

Addition to May minutes: Due to David Ziesmer’s absence at the May meeting, the treasurer’s report was added to the minutes.

 Acknowledgements/Announcements

1.      Julie Kanazawa will be taking over for Leslie Hisaka as Secretary.  We would like to thank Leslie Hisaka for her many years serving as the J.A. Secretary.  We appreciate all her hard work and continued support of the club.

2.      $1,000 donation to the building fund from the Matsutani family in memory and gratitude for Misa Matsutani’s involvement in the JA Club.

3.      $200 donation to the building fund from the Co-ed Exercise class in appreciation of the use of the building.

4.      Thank you note received from the Kitagawa family for all of the support and help with David Kitagawa’s memorial service.

5.      $200 donation to the JARCC for the scholarship fund from California Bank and Trust.

6.      $100 donation to the scholarship fund from Susan Nishizaka.

7.      $500 donation to the scholarship fund from Wells Fargo Bank.

8.      $100 donation to Shinwakai from the Matsutani family.

9.      $50 donation from Elaine Saika in memory of Misa Matsutani.

10.  $25 donation from Derrick and Louise Lue in memory of David Kitagawa.

Affiliated Clubs/Chairpersons Reports:

 

 

 

JARCC – Sam Sunada

·         Fire alarm sensors were replaced in May as the wrong sensors were initially installed. Hopefully there are no other false alarms.

·         Continuing to do minor repairs on the roof of the pavilion.

Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • Rev. Kujo will speak this Saturday, June 6th at 5:30 P.M.   This will be the last regular service for the school year.
  • This year’s JARCC sponsored Obon Service will take place on Tuesday, July 28th at 7:30 P.M.   Rev. Bridge will be the guest speaker.

Jr. YBA – Sharon Akiyama

 

  • No report.

 

Nippongo GakuenJon Kubokawa

  • School ended with our Gakkugeikai event on May 16th.
  • Rodger Johnson is our new President and Sonoe Hum will return as our Vice President. The rest of the board will stay on:  Jon Kubokawa (treasurer), Mika Arbelbide (recording secretary), and Miho Ridgway (corresponding secretary).
  • Thank you to the Summer Festival committee for getting the raffle tickets to us. We were able to pass them out to our families on the last day of school.
  • School starts again on Saturday, September 12th (the first Saturday after Labor Day).
  • Anyone interested in the school should check out our website: http://www.diablonippongogakuen.org/. There is an e-mail address posted there. Miho Ridgway will follow up on e-mails received on our site.

Athletic Club – Judith Aono

·         Sign ups will take place Friday, June 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

·         “Mature” Women’s basketball practices have begun. Join the ladies as they work out on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:00 P.M.

Building Superintendent – Jon Yokoyama

·         No report.

Gardeners’ Club – Judith Aono

  • Clean-up on Mothers’ Day in May went well. The JA Club treated volunteers to lunch.

Ikenobo Club – Judith Aono

  • No report.

 

JASEB –Yukio Kitagawa

 

  • No report.

 

Judo Club - Conrad Hisaka

 

  • Competitors are training for the Junior Nationals which will be held at the City College of San Francisco on Sunday, July 12th.

 

 Diablo Kendo Club – Judith Aono

 

  • No report.

 

Shinwakai – Yukio Kitagawa

 

The 25th Annual Family Talent Night will be held on Saturday, June 27th at 6:00 P.M. There will be a potluck dinner. Families with last names beginning A – K are asked to bring salad. Families with last names beginning L – Z are asked to bring a main dish. Entertainment will be provided by the different JA Club organizations. Presidents of the various organizations will be receiving information about the event and descriptions of duties from Yukio Kitagawa. All those with a talent that they would like to share are encouraged to submit an application for entertainment. As is done each year, seniors who will celebrate their 80th birthday this year will be honored. Also, one senior will be recognized with the Pioneer Award

 

 

 

 

     Diablo Taiko Club – Kathy Fujisaka

 

  • The club performed at two school assemblies on May 11th. They performed at Ayers Elementary School in the morning and at Indian Valley Elementary School in the afternoon.
  • Club members attended a workshop hosted by the San Francisco Taiko Dojo on Sunday, May 31. Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka gave the club permission to play one of his original songs and invited them to open practice with the San Francisco Taiko Dojo.

 

 

  • The club will be performing at the Aono wedding on June 6th
  • The regular taiko group, as well as the Zeni-Daiko group, will be performing for the 25th Annual Family Talent Night on Saturday, June 27th .

 

   Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

 

  • Festival planning is underway. Festival chairs will meet on Wednesday, June 10th.
  • Obon practices will be held on the following dates from 7:30 – 8:45 P.M:
      1. Monday, July 13
      2. Wednesday, July 15
      3. Monday, July 20
      4. Wednesday, July 22
      5. Monday, July 27
      6. Monday, August 3
  • Programs are back from the printer. Extras are available if anyone is interested.
  • The posters have been printed and will be in shortly.
  • The Nippongo Gakuen received raffle tickets before the end of their school year. All other organizations and members will receive raffle tickets soon.
  • Thank you to the Kubokawa family for being the first to turn in raffle tickets.  Please turn in your raffle tickets to Wayne Akiyama

 

    

   Membership Chairperson – Laura Takeuchi

 

  • Two new families have joined. Membership received 3 renewals this month. New family names will be sent to Sam Sunada so that they can be included in the festival roster.

    

   

   Old Business

 

·        Family Talent Night – Saturday, June 27th.

·        The scholarship committee has chosen this year’s awardees. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 7 at 5:00 P.M. at Zio Fraedo’s. The featured speaker will be Deputy Consul General Hideyuki Mitsuoka from the Office of the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco. Sam Sunada will be our Master of Ceremonies. We expect about 60 attendees.

     New Business

 

·        Come help with construction on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 P.M. beginning on Monday, July 6th.

·         The Gift Shop booth needs items to sell. Please let Lilian Muraoka know if you have items you would like to donate
