Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

Meeting Date:   May 6, 2009

President Sharon Akiyama called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM.

 

Corrections/Additions to Previous Minutes

Building Superintendent has not needed to call the bee keeper. Although dripping honey was found, no bees have been seen. If bees return, the bee keeper will be contacted.

1.      $200.00 to the JA Club from Nippongo Gakuen for the JA Scholarship Fund.

2.      $500.00 from the Kitagawa family for the Building Fund

Affiliated Clubs/Chairpersons Reports:

 

 

 

JARCC – Sam Sunada

·         Roof repair on the pavilion is complete.

·         Honey has been seen dripping but there are no other signs of bees.

·         Smoke alarm sensors were replaced on May 5, 2009 so we hope there are no more false alarms.

·         We are looking into installing lock boxes on the exterior of the building so that the fire department (and the people on the call list) can access the building in case of an emergency.

Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • Reverends scheduled to speak this month: 
    • May 10th - Rev. Kujo
    • May 24th  - Dr. S. Taniguchi
    • May 31st - Rev. Masuda
  • Reverend Kujo will speak at the last regular service for the school year on Saturday, June 6th at 5:30 P.M.  A potluck dinner will follow the service.
  • All are invited to attend Obon Service on Tuesday, July 28th at 7:30 P.M.  Reverend Bridge will be the guest speaker.

Jr. YBA – Sharon Akiyama

 

  • No report.

 

Nippongo GakuenJulie Kanazawa

  • April 25th - The alarm inadvertently went off.
  • May 9th – The last General Meeting of the school year. The membership will be voting in the new board. There is currently no candidate for president. In the meantime, Sandi Svoboda will continue to attend JA Club meetings.
  • Friday, May 15th – The Gakuen has requested the use of the far side of the gym from 7:00-9:00 P.M. in order to set up the stage and prepare for Gakugeikai the following day. Please be aware that this may affect gym use by other groups.
  • Saturday, May 16th - Last Day of School – Gakugeikai.
  • If summer festival raffle tickets are available either May 9th or May 16th, we can hand them to Gakuen membership and save on postage.

Athletic Club – Dave Uemura

·         Most teams have finished practicing. However some teams are continuing to practice for upcoming tournaments.

·         Sign ups will take place Friday, June 5th from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.  Flyer Info.

Building Superintendent – Jon Yokoyama

·         Please remind all clubs that playing handball off the walls of the gym is prohibited.

Gardeners’ Club – Judith Aono

  • Sunday, May 10th – Semi-Annual Clean-Up Day. All who would like to help are welcome.

Ikenobo Club – Pat Baba

  • No report.

 

JASEB –Yukio Kitagawa

 

  • No report.

 

 

    Judo Club - Conrad Hisaka

 

  • Thank you to the JARCC for allowing Judo Club to practice on Tuesday nights from now until festival preparation in July.
  • Students attended the last of the local tournaments the past two weekends. Congratulations to Ryan Hisaka who took 1st at both the Bay Isle Judo Tournament on April 26th and the CCSF Tournament on May 3rd.   Also placing at the CCSF tournament were Sydney Kanazawa (3rd) and Toshio Kanazawa (3rd).
  • This year’s Junior Nationals will be held locally at San Francisco City College. Competitors are working out twice a week to prepare for this and soon Sunday workouts at other clubs will begin

 

     Diablo Kendo Club – Mike Espinosa

 

  • No report.

 

  Shinwakai – Yukio Kitagawa

 

  • Thank you from the Kitagawa family to the JA Club and all those who participated in the memorial service for David Kitagawa who was 43 years old. Yukio related that David Kitagawa enjoyed this organization. It was at his urging that 30 years ago the Kitagawa family joined the JA Club.

 

     Diablo Taiko Club – Judith Aono

 

  • The club has two school performances on May 11th. They will play at Ayers Elementary in the morning and at Indian Valley in the afternoon.

 

   Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

 

  • Meetings with festival chairs will start later this month.
  • Various items are at the printer.
  • Every year, construction begins the first Monday after July 4th. This year’s construction begins on July 6th starting at 7:00 P.M. and runs every Monday and Wednesday until the last week before festival.

 

     Membership Chairperson – Laura Takeuchi

    Old Business

 

·        Family Talent Night – Saturday, June 27th – All who have a talent that they’d like to share are encouraged to participate.

·        If anyone knows of any Middle School, High School, or college graduates, please send addresses to Sharon Akiyama so invitations can be sent. The Scholarship Dinner and Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 7th beginning at 5:00 P.M. at Zio Fraedo’s in Pleasant Hill.  Flyer Info.

·        If you are interested in attending, please contact Joyce at joyce.hsi@gmail.com.  (see attached flyer regarding the Scholarship Dinner)  Suggestions for inspirational speakers should be sent to Joyce Shindo.

     New Business

 

·        The side door to the gym was found unlatched on Sunday, May 3rd. All groups please check each door before you leave.  Thank you.
