Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

Meeting Date:   June 4, 2008

President Sharon Akiyama called the meeting to order at 7:32 PM.

Corrections/Additions to Previous Minutes

Treasurer’s ReportDavid Ziesmer presented the treasurer’s report

 

 Acknowledgements/Announcements

1.      Donation from Exercise class for $200.00 to the bldg fund

2.      Donation from Union Bank for $500.00 for the Scholarship fund

3.      Donation from California bank and Trust for $200.00 for the Scholarship fund

Affiliated Clubs/Chairpersons Reports:

 

 

 

JARCC – Dave Uemura for Sam Sunada

·         They are in the process of taking care of the bee problem.  The roof must be removed, the bee hive removed, and then the roof repaired.  This all to take place before festival hopefully.

Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • The final service will be on Sat. June 7th.  David Matsumoto will preside.
  • Obon service will take place on Tuesday, July 29th at 7:30 P.M.  Rev. Kujo will be the guest minister

Jr. YBA – Sharon Akiyama for Sam Sunada

  • No report. 

Nippongo Gakuen – Jon Yokoyama

  • The last day of school was May 17th. Each class gave presentations, honored seniors, and awards were given.
  • The final membership mtg. was held May 10th. Members were reminded of their responsibilities for summer festival.  Elections for next year’s board took place.
  • Classes will resume On September 6th.
  • The Gakuen 2008-09 Board is as follows:
  • Co-presidents: Yale Kofman & Sandi Svoboda
  • Vice President: Julie Kanazawa
  • Treasurer: Jon Kubokawa
  • Recording Secretary: open
  • Corresponding secretary: Miho Ridgway

Athletic Club – Dave Uemura

·         Signups for next year’s basketball season is Friday, June 6th from 6-8 P.M.

Building Superintendent – Jon Yokoyama

·         Doors are being left open or left ajar.  PLEASE be more careful and have 2 people check EVERY door when using the facility.

Gardeners’ Club – Judith Aono

·         On Mother’s Day the club cleaned/pruned the entire grounds.  Thank you.

Ikenobo Club - Pat Baba

 

  • A request for small teacups or small bowls to make small arrangements to sell at festival was made.  Any members who have such items, please bring them to the JA Hall.  There will be a box labeled under the stairs, or you can bring them to their class that meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7 P.M. Thank you.  

 

JASEB –Yukio Kitagawa

 

·         There is still an opening for Executive Director.

 

 

   Judo Club - Leslie Hisaka

 

  • The club worked at the Okubo Judo Tournament in Sacramento on May 18th.  The following competitors placed: Michael Sakaida- 1st, Sydney Kanazawa- 2nd, Megan Ikeda, Derek Lin and Kalene Leong all took 3rd. Congrats!

 

Diablo Kendo Club – Mike Espinosa

 

  • No report.

 

Shinwakai – Yukio Kitagawa

 

  • The 24th Annual Family Talent night will be on June 28th at 6 P.M.. All organizations are to provide entertainment for this event. They will set up the night before at 8 P.M.  Anyone available to help with set-up is encouraged to come out.

 

   Diablo Taiko Club – Susan Nishizaka

 

  • They are in the process of developing taiko for the grade schools.  They had a trial at Indian Valley Elementary which was well received.
  • They are looking for an inexpensive practice place for this summer.  Please contact them if you know of any available place.

 

 

 

Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

 

  • The first chairperson mtg. is on June 11th at 7:30 P.M.
  • Programs, posters, and raffle tickets are all at the printer and should be ready soon.
  • Construction begins July 7th at 7:00 P.M
  • Obon dance practice begins Wednesday, July 16th.  If anyone needs to borrow a yukata (summer kimono) please contact Judith Aono at (925) 689-2083.  Adult and children sizes available.
  • The craft boutique is looking for items to sell.

 

   Membership Chairperson – Sam Sunada

  Old Business

 

  • The graduation Dinner took place on June 1st at Zio Fraedo Restaurant in Pleasant Hill.  The event was well attended.  The guest speaker was Ms. Colleen Oinuma, a 2008 graduate from the University of California at Berkeley.  Six high school graduates received scholarships.  There are:  Lindsay Tamura (College Park High School), Josh Ziesmer (Las Lomas High School), Eric Osada (Clayton Valley High School), Jamey Ichiuji (San Ramon Valley High School), Christopher Sonoda (Miramonte High School) and Michael Tsujimoto (Salesian High School).  Congratulations to all our graduates of middle school, high school and college!  (For more information on the graduation dinner, please visit our website and read the article by Scholarship Chairperson, Karen Sakata).

  New Business

 

·        For those using the gym:  Please be mindful of the time for which your group is scheduled, and be on/off the court accordingly. Please respect one another when using the facility.
