Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

Meeting Date:   March 3, 2008

President Sharon Akiyama called the meeting to order at 7:33 PM.

Treasurer’s Report:  David Ziesmer presented the treasurer’s report.

Affiliated Clubs/Chairpersons Reports:

 

 

 

JARCC – Sam Sunada

·         Thanks to Dave Uemura and Jon Yokoyama for handing out new keys and changing locks.

·         The water heater has been repaired and is working fine.

·         The outside restrooms will be improved before Summer Festival.

Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • Hanamatsuri service will be held Sunday, 4/13 with Reverend Ron Kobata.  Lunch will be served after the service.  Everyone is invited to attend.

Jr. YBA – Sam Sunada

  • No report. 

 

Nippongo Gakuen – Neil Nakatsuka

  • There are 69 students and 45 families.
  • The Board meeting and luncheon will be held this weekend.
  • Kodomo No Hi is scheduled for 3/15; there will be a potluck and a karate demonstration.
  • School will be closed on 3/29 for spring break.
  • A procedure has been implemented to have a board member check and lock all doors once everyone has left after class.
  • A thank you to Sam Sunada for coming to a recent meeting to answer questions for the members.

Athletic Club – Dave Uemura

·         Shaughnessy tournament was held last weekend; Thanks to all who helped and ordered  dinners.

·         The regular season is now over and tournaments are beginning.

·         Signups for next year is June 6th.

·         Congratulations to Boys’ B Team (Third Place), Boys’ C-2  Team (Second Place), Boys’ C-1 Team (Third Place), and Girls’ C Team (FIRST PLACE) on their Shaughnessy tournament play.

Building Superintendent – Jon Yokoyama

·         No report.

Gardeners’ Club – Judith Aono

·         No report.

Ikenobo Club - Pat Baba

  • No report. 

 

JASEB –Yukio Kitagawa

·         Yukio has missed the last few meetings due to conflicts and has requested that a new Diablo representative be found to take his place.  Meetings are generally held on the 3rd Monday of the month from 7pm in Berkeley.  This person represents Diablo and has one voting right.  A representative from JASEB has volunteered to attend the JA Club monthly meeting to provide us with updates until a new representative can be found.

 

   Judo Club - Conrad Hisaka

  • Three students attended the San Jose Buddhist Judo Tournament on February 10; Ryan Hisaka and Derek Lin both placed 1st in their respective divisions; Michael Sakaida placed 2nd in his division.  Congratulations.
  • Several students will compete in the Cupertino Invitational this Sunday.
  • A request for use of the gym for a second night of Judo has been submitted to the JARCC. 

 

Diablo Kendo Club – Sharon Akiyama

  • Thank you to the Exercise Club for helping to organize the Installation Dinner, Bea Tamichi for the flowers, and all who attended.

 

Shinwakai – Yukio Kitagawa

  • 3/29: Meeting at SACBC for the annual New Years get-together; a bus will be picking up members at the JA Club at 9:30 – 10:00 am and returning around 3pm.  Space is still available.
  • 4/19: Taiko will be providing entertainment with audience participation.
  • 5/17  Planning a Bingo Day.
  • June 28, 6pm: Talent Night.

 

   Diablo Taiko Club – Jiro Hess

  • Planning the participation for the Shinwakai event.
  • Their public debut is scheduled for this year’s Summer Festival.
  • They are currently building four new drums.

 

Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

  • Planning has begun for this year’s festival on August 9th and 10th.
  • They are working on designing the poster and procuring raffle prizes.

   

 

  Membership Chairperson – Sam Sunada

  • A draft of the updated membership directory was made available at the meeting; Target for completion is end of March.  Thanks to Sharon Akiyama and Pat Baba for their help.  Pat contacted expired members and got a 25% return rate.
  • Waivers are missing for several clubs including: Adult Basketball; Exercise Club.
  • Sam has updated the club list, removing inactive clubs and adding new ones.
  • Discussion was held on required fees for delinquent members.  By-laws state that they must repay the initiation fee to rejoin if they have been removed from the active roster.  This can be waived for extenuating circumstances by the Board.
  • We have 363 families; 108 (30%) are seniors.
  • Sam will only serve as membership chairperson through the ’08-’09 membership registration.

 

  Old Business

  • Sharon found a tutor for a Japanese speaking student at Diablo View Middle School.

  New Business

·        JA Scholarship applications are now available in foyer.  If you have any questions, please contact Karen Sakata.

·        Any clubs that have graduates this year should submit their names to Sharon Akiyama.  The dinner will be held on June 1 at Zio Fraedo’s.  The guest speaker will be Leroy Morishita of SFSU.
