Minutes of the J.A. Meeting

Meeting Date:  March. 7, 2007

President Pat Baba called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM.

Treasurer’s ReportDavid Ziesmer presented the treasurer’s report

 

 Acknowledgements/Announcements

     Thank you to the following families for their generous donations:

1.  $200 donation received from the Ikenobo Club to the building fund.

2.  $25 donation received from Laura Takaeuchi in memory of Emi Shimada.

3.  $25 donation received from Gary Nye in memory of Emi Shimada.

4.  $120 donated from Sophia Gota through the B of A United Way campaign.

5.  $50 from Michael and Marilyn  Astin in memory of Ren Tanaka.

6.  $200 from Roger and Karen Matoba in memory of Ren Tanaka (Karen’s mother).

7.  Yosh Shimada donated an undisclosed amount in memory of Emi Shimada.

 

Affiliated Clubs/Chairpersons Reports:

 

 

 

JARCC - Sam Sunada

·         Any club/member using the kitchen are to wash, dry and return the kitchen towels.

·         In case of an Emergency/accident, please report any occurrence to the JA Club president who in turn will contact the JARCC president.

Buddhist Fellowship - Sharon Akiyama

  • Hanamatsuri on Sunday April 8th.   Service is at 10:00am.  Michael Endo from Oakland will be the speaker.  Lunch will be served after the service.

Jr. YBA – Sam Sunada

  • Thank you to all that supported the Udon Feed.  It was successful. 
  • It was a privilege to help out the Shinwakai at their bingo event.

 

Nippongo Gakuen – Dave Zeismer

  • School is in session.  There are still openings, particularly in the older classes. 
  • Board meeting each month.

Athletic Club – Sharon Akiyama

  • Thanks to all that supported the Shaughnessy dinner fundraiser.
  • Thank you to those involved in installing the new glass backboards.

Building Superintendent – Jon Yokoyama

 

  • All clubs are to report to John how many sets of keys they have.  His phone number is listed in the JA Club directory.    

Gardeners’ Club – No Rep

·        No report.

Ikenobo Club - Pat Baba

 

  • No report.

 

JASEB –Yukio Kitagawa

 

·         Thank you to the president and vice president for attending their annual crab feed.  It was successful and attended by more than in previous years.

·         Every Friday evening from 5-10 p.m. at SACBC in Union City, JASEB have a bingo night.  They are looking for 2 volunteers each week to assist in the festivities. If you can help, contact Laura Takeuchi

 

Judo Club - Leslie Hisaka

  • Congratulations to Ryan Hisaka who placed first at the San Jose Buddhist Memorial tournament in February. (This was particularly memorable since he had been out of competition for 7 months due to a badly broken elbow!) Congratulations also to Derek Lin who placed third and “played” very tough!  Their Sensei was very proud.

 

 

 

Diablo Kendo Club – Judith Aono

 

  • No report.

 

Shinwakai – Yukio Kitagawa

 

  • Laura Takeuchi, the executive Director for JASEB was present for our meeting.
  • Thank you to Sam and Jeff Sunada who helped out at their Bingo event
  • On March 24th at SACBC, the annual Shinwakai of Northern California will meet to celebrate New Years. Members will leave the JA club at 9:30 a.m. and return by 3 p.m. to celebrate the 27th annual Shinnenkai. It is the year of the boar.
  • The April meeting will be on Saturday the 21st.
  • Two long time members of the JA club and the Shinwakai passed in February.  Kazue Ajari and Mr. Tanji.  Our condolences to their families.
  • Family Talent Night will take place on Saturday June 23rd at 6 p.m.  All clubs are to supply Talent for this very fun evening.  Please start planning early.

 

Summer Festival – Ron Onizuka

 

  • Planning meetings have begun.  They are presently planning the posters and ticket design

   

   Membership Chairperson – Mike Espinosa

 

  • No report.

 

  Old Business

 

  • All clubs are to turn in waivers to Pat Baba or put them in the new binder that is in the office.
  • There are live bees in the gym again.  The company that exterminated them last year has been contacted to take care of the problem.

  New Business

 

·         Discussion to put $ into a 6 month CD to make interest for the JA Club was raised.  The Treasurer is to research this and report back next month at the monthly meeting.

·         Laura from JASEB discussed the “Feinstein Challenge”.  It is a fundraiser started by Alan Shawn Feinstein who donates one million dollars annually to help feed the seniors.  All are encouraged to donate to this worthy cause to help seniors have a healthy meal and stay loner in their own homes.  Contributions must be made by April 30th.  For more information, please contact the JASEB office at 510-848-3560.

·         Affiliated clubs need to put in their schedules immediately to the JARCC.  The Howakai and Gardener’s Club have not submitted their schedules yet this year.  These requests need to go through the JARCC before they can be put on the paper calendar.
